Spiti Valley is a cold desert mountain Valley. “Spiti” means ‘the middle land’. It is a land between India and Tibet.

Here local people follow Buddhism. Most of the Buddhist choose Spiti Valley as a research and culture centre. Two of the oldest monasteries, namely, Key  Monastery and Tabo Monastery are located here. It is the favourite place of Dalai Lama too.

Ideal time to visit:- in summers- April to October

In winters– October to February

How To Reach Spiti Valley?

There are two routes to reach valley

Route 1:- From Chandigarh- Manali -Rohtang Pass- Kunzum Pass- Losar- Kaza 

Route 2:- From Chandigarh- Shimla Narkanda- Kinnaur Valley – Tabo- Kaza

So, you can see that one can enter Spiti Valley from one  Shimla side and exit Valley from manali back to Chandigarh make it the complete circuit.

Where is Rohtang Pass and Kunjum pass?

Rohtang Pass (3979 m) separates lahaul and Spiti from Kullu Valley. Kunjum Pass (4590 m) separates Lahaul and Spiti from each other.

The valley is usually cut off from rest of the world for almost six months due to heavy snowfall.

Although entry to Spiti from Shimla via Kinnaur is open throughout the year, but it is less advisable to visit during winters.

In summers it can be reached via Manali through the Rohtang Pass and Kunjum Pass. Tourists from outside India need ‘inner line permit’ to enter Spiti through Kinnaur.

 One may feel altitude sickness in Spiti due to the high altitude.
